Two years ago marked the 50th anniversary of one of the greatest high school football teams ever in the state of Nevada.Head coach Chris Ault’s 1970 Bishop Manogue High Miners.Long before he won a single game as the Nevada Wolf Pack’s coach, Ault won a Nevada Class AA state title across the street from Nevada
Bishop Manogue’s first quarterback, Tom Kessenich, returned to Reno last week seven decades after he last suited up for the Miners. Kessenich, who now lives in Colorado, spoke to Bishop Manogue before the team’s game against Reed last week. He was invited back to campus by the Miners Football Alumni Association, Inc., which coordinated the trip.
The moments after the Miners defeated Moapa Valley for the 1988 State AA Championship. The final score was Miners: 21 – Moapa Valley: 17. The RGJ’s caption for the picture says that the player in the foreground, # 14, is Scott Talbott who was the Miners’ quarterback that year.
The 1982 Nevada state championship game pitted Bishop Manogue against bitter rival the Truckee Wolverines. Down 13-0 at the half, the Miner struggled mightily to move the ball. The third quarter passed with the ball changing possession but no score. It seemed like a field position battle with the Wolverines trying to run the clock out and win the state title.
